Whether it is the streets of Paris, the roadside bistro in England, or the terrace cafe in Vienna, coffee tables and romance is somehow connected at a DNA level. It‘s perhaps coffee itself. It is said that Johann Sebastian Bach had once described coffee as "lovelier than a thousand kisses, sweeter far than muscatel wine!". There cannot be a more romantic description of a drink than that.
First, why do you need coffee tables and end tables - or either one of these? Many use them simply for show, and rarely for coffee. Others use them only when they have guests while yet others actually use them in the course of a normal day for their primary intended use.
Wooden Coffee Tables: Wooden coffee tables have less safety problems as a rule than glass ones; however there are still hazards that can exist. One of the particular dangers commonly encountered is the problem of small children learning to walk who injure themselves on sharp corners. Many baby and parenting shops and even IKEA now sell corner bumpers; small rounded foam or plastic caps that help to prevent injury. Whilst these are not too attractive to look at they are a great way to prevent accidents and only need to be used for a relatively small time whilst your child is in their toddler phase. Similarly there are now "bumpers" available that can be run along the edges of any wooden coffee table. These are heavily padded lengths of material that fix to the surface to prevent injury. They can later be removed when no longer needed.
Coffee tables and end tables should also meet the purpose you have intended for them. In some cases, this will be simply as a repository for a coffee cup or drinks glass. For others it might mean holding countless magazines or ‘coffee table‘ books. Whatever your purpose is, your occasional tables should meet your needs while also matching the rest of the furniture in the room - or by contrasting with it by design.
